Story
Sarmale are probably of Turkish in origin ( most certainly the name is, but Romanian cooks have left their own mark on the dish. Sour cabbage leaves, a product widely available in Central and Eastern Europe and the Balkans, give the preparation a Romanian flair, along with the tomato and cabbage sauce that the sarmale are cooked in.

How it's made
They are usually made with pickled cabbage (or sometimes with grape leaves) and stuffed with ground pork (sometimes combined with beef), rice and seasoned with various herbs and spices. They are served with mămăliguță (polenta) and few generous tablespoons of sour cream.
