Maramureș, the land of wood

The region of Maramureș is worldwide famous for its woodcarving and wood architecture.
The tradition was passed on through generations to nowadays so one can still find woodcraftsmen working in old fashion workshops!

ETHNOGRAPHIC EXPERIENCE

The History

Wooden churches, UNESCO World Heritage Sites, famous traditional Maramureșean gates, are the proof of an entire history carved in wood. Wood sculpture made by a folk artist is perhaps the most authentic way to express the feelings of a soul, not a stone but a soulless wood, which is alive, up to the time of slaughter.

How it’s made

Here, the traditional houses are made of timber, with steep shingled roofs; dovetail joints, wooden pegs and no nails. Gates are enormous, topped by a shingle roof, and with intricate woodcarvings of ropes, suns and wolves' teeth to protect the family from harm.
