Life in the shepherd camp

Transhumance is a very ancient pastoral tradition in Romania. The shepherds live in their own world,
in another time and space different from our modern society

About
După coada oilor, or ‘going on the road’, is a term that Romanian sheep farmers and hired shepherds use to describe long-distance walks with their flocks between summer and winter pastures. ‘Long distance’ here may mean anything from 50 to 300 km and periods of between two days to eight weeks.

The view
At first it was an old pastoral practice done for thousands of years. It signifies seasonal movement of herds of cattle, sheep or goats from places good for grazing in the summer, with grasslands, and wintering sites, with milder winter climates. Now they are spectacular roads (like Transfăgărășan, Trans-alpina, Transrarău) in the mountains that allow us to go through in a pleasant way using transport and allowing us to feel a glimpse of the magic of those times.
